Many people making small changes makes a big difference.
If each resident of Mountain View (~75,000 people) each kept 1 pound of garbage from going into the landfill everyday, that would be 27,375,000 lbs of garbage per year or about 13.7 thousand tons, which is 23% of Mountain View's annual garbage. Reducing Mountain View's garbage by 23% in a year would be a big step. Especially since Santa Clara County forecasts that its landfills will be full in about 15 years.

Methane is 72 times more potent than Carbon Dioxide as a greenhouse gas over 20-years. Many Mountain View residents know (remember the flames on the grass at Shoreline Amphitheater?) that landfills generate methane. So, reducing garbage going to landfills helps significantly in beating climate chaos.
